SOS Art at the Mockbee in Review
Quite honestly... it was a curiosity to see how an event, heretofore dominated by poets and visual artists, would change with the addition of dancers! Especially belly dancers!!! The choice of dance form was important to the event. It could not be just any dance....
The poets were quite amused, I think, by the opening poem, "Why We Dance" which I read as it was enacted by Jenn Dawson, Laura Smith and Avasa. Dave on Dumbek. The point of the poem is this: Bellydance, whether we like it or not, links us to the women of the middle-east. To dance this dance is to claim a sisterhood with them.. It is incomprehensible that we would be bombing our sisters while dancing their dance.
About mid-way thorugh the evening the Public Urban Ritual Experiment (P.U.R.E.) entered the scene to spice things up again. The mission of P.U.R.E. is a noble one. They are a group of dancers and musicians, with chapters nationwide, who perfrom to make a point. The point seems to me to be the same as the one in the poem. We all want peace. Now!
At the end of the evening, Snakes Rising and Mysterious Ways closed the event with some open bellydancing. This photo was taken during the Open Hafla. It is of Kristi Schewe (of P.U.R.E.)
Thanks to all the dancers who turned out to dance, in solidarity with their mid-east sisters!!! SOS Art at the Mockbee is a peace and justice oriented event. 2006 was the third year for it. This year was heavily dominated by anti-war and anti-Bush sentiment. I am not going to pretend that I wasn't happy to be part of that.
How can one be led to bomb the home of a grandmother who shares her secrets?
Be Peace,
